Why We Like It
While it may not be the best for earning points and has a high annual fee of $695, this is the ultimate luxury travel card. It includes a variety of credits and additional benefits that can be appealing and help justify the annual fee, such as an annual airline fee credit of up to $200 for incidental charges, up to $240 per year in digital entertainment credits received monthly (up to $20 per month), up to $200 per year in Uber Cash received monthly (up to $15 per month plus an additional $20 in December), access to The Global Lounge Collection which includes more than 1,400 airport lounges worldwide, including the American Express Centurion Lounge network and Delta Sky Club (subject to limitations; see terms).
The card earns Membership Rewards® points that can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards, statement credits, and travel through AmexTravel.com, but the value is usually low. The best way to redeem them is for travel by transferring them to airline and hotel loyalty programs. American Express partners with 18 airlines and 3 hotel chains for point transfers.
It offers 5x points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or American Express Travel® (up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year), 5x points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com, and 1x point per dollar on other eligible purchases.
Since it only earns more than 1x point per dollar outside the categories of airlines and prepaid hotels through AmexTravel.com, it is not a great option for daily use and accumulating points, but rather to take advantage of all the other credits and benefits it offers.
